ScienceDaily.com:
All the (Research) News That’s Fit to Print

Admittedly, Science Daily.com (www.sciencedaily.com) is not exclusively devoted to food news. But when it comes to keeping abreast of the latest developments in scientific research there’s not a better site on the information super highway!

Science Daily.com, touted as “Your link to the latest research news,” is jam-packed with a mix of newsy, brain-stimulating stories from every corner of the research globe. Items are added daily (Monday through Friday) and cover such diverse topics as “How Did Matter Come to Dominate The Universe?” “Lubricating Nanoscale Machines,” and “University of Washington Physicists Find that Extra Dimensions must be Smaller than 0.2 Millimeters!” An eclectic mix to be sure.

But that’s not to say there isn’t a certain amount of useful food industry information thrown in. One of the more interesting was a recent story entitled “Toward a Better Burger: ‘Where’s the Selenium?’” The piece, sourced from the American Chemical Society, noted that researchers from the USDA’s Grand Forks Human Research Center in North Dakota had determined there is a direct connection between the concentrations of selenium in the soil and in beef—the higher the concentration in the soil, the higher the concentration in the beef. This is a potentially important finding considering that beef is the single largest source of selenium in the North American diet, and that a daily supplement of 200 micrograms of selenium was shown in 1996 to have reduced the incidence of all cancers by more than 50 percent!

So, if you’re the sort who can’t get enough of thought-provoking science minutia ScienceDaily.com should be good for at least an hour of your time each week!
